Gonna Rant. Go ahead bitch at me for being wrong gais. jk. Letting off some steam, here we go:

I am getting quite tired of seeing certain critiques that I don't feel are real critiques that could help me progress in art.

This is more so common from people who are new to my art or page that crack their knuckles and type a critique saying certain things that are more of an opinion than trying to help me improve on my artistic ability.

Now I must say I love getting critiques on my work. I appreciate them a lot since they help me greatly for future submissions. HOWEVER, there are certain things that I need to point out here and for the future and briefly warn in my Artist comments.

Certain nitpicks within critiques are not necissary.

For example: I would post a picture and it's proportions are off a little. Someone would post a critique. (generally someone new and not a frequent visitor or friend. However I've gotten a frequent visitor before who did something similar) The critique would perhaps be like this:

"I have to nitpick the clothes they look too much like so-and-so. They should be more like so-and-so."

I'm really sorry but that isn't a critique, that is a personal opinion. Nitpicking every little thing you don't find right which includes your personal taste is NOT a critique. To be honest I really don't like that inserted into critiques. No, I'm not insulting the people who critique. Just know that the artist would definitely not appreciate it.

You should not tell people what to do or how to do things in critiques if it's not artisticly related. Do not attemtpt to compare the artist and tell them to create things inspired from some movie or videogame.

It doesn't assist the artist if they already displayed their characters in the style they chose. What if the artist didn't want their characters to be the way you told them to be displayed?

Another one which irks me: "The color you used is Ugly."

Sorry to burst your happy bubble but that is not critique. "Ugly" is an insult. Sure it's a prefference. Sure it's an opinion, but it's not to be used in artistic critique. Proffessional art teachers NEVER use the term "ugly" for critiquing their peers. I've had my share of Art teachers durring summer programs and private lessons. If someone calls your art ugly do you feel that is harsh critique that could help you improve or do you feel insulted? You tell me. I definitely feel insulted.


(I bet a few of you are enjoying this Rant crap because you haven't seen the-SB-wrath in awhile. If you dun like it stop here nao.)

Also another one that itches me like poision ivy is critiques from IZ-Purists who tell me that I should be following Jhonon's Almighty Book of Irken Rules. Sorry purists, I really don't follow his rules about, "NO BOOBSLOL" and "NO EYECOLORS BESIDES RED,PURPLE AND GREEN!!!acbonetwothreecomealongsingwithmelolmichaeljacksonwtf" (sorry went a little far there with interwebz humor.)

Dude, I totally respect that you're not part of the fandom, but please for the love of Ghandi don't bother telling me that. You're not gonna change my opinion or more importantly the way I draw irkens.

Jhonen's rules don't help me in my art, it just creates a boring fandom. Anyone remember the Irken Purists club? ( don't remember what it stood for but it was something along the lines of: Fan art in honor or Fan Artist Irken honor or something like that.)

Well these guys died out a few years back since they all got bored of drawing the same old Irkens trying to keep Jhonen's rules pure. For the purists that want to please Jhonen about pure non-fandomized Irkens, you're in for a real treat:

JHONEN HATES INVADER ZIM. Don't believe me? I think you should look up his interviews and check his blog from awhile back when he talked about it. He really doesn't like that stuff because of bad memories from Nick and most probably because some retardo fans creeped him out at conventions. So it doesn't make a difference if you try to keep up with the guy's rules to please him, either way. He doesn't. Fucking. Care.

For the those who don't care about pleasing Jhonen and just aren't knowing of the fandom, I will make a further notice in my Artist comments to request from you to please refrain from the urge to nitpick things that don't seem to be "Jhonen's Rules." Because why? I don't care. Don't bother.


"But I'm entitled to my opinion, you can't tell me what I can or cannot say?!"

Yes we are very much entitled to speak our thoughts. Here's why I don't want people saying these things:

Because I probably already know about it.
Maybe you should keep it to yourself.
Probably beacause you can't change my opinion or my drawing style.


Again, making a critique does not mean nitpick everything on the picture that bothers you INCLUDING things that will not help the artist progress in their work. Evaluating the image carefully and pointing out things that you see is faulty artistically would definitely help the artist. For example:

"The floor is off, it would look better if you moved it up a little." "The forearm is a bit too long." "The perspective is askew. The horizon point...etc" Is good critique.

Simply stating how the artist should do things YOUR way, stating something the artist already knows and won't change for you, or using insulting words will not assist the artist in any way.

Please think before you type a storm of a critique. It will help in the longrun.

We're all not perfect but this should be used as a rule of thumb when artists will critique pictures.
